Butt in Chair

Doug Savage, who draws (on post-its) wonderful cartoons (mostly about chickens) has offered up some Olympic events for the lazy. If you're not a follower, you can find him here.

However, if you're a writer, when your butt is in a chair, it's not necessarily a bad thing. It might mean you're writing.

What tricks do you have up your sleeve (or in your waistband) that keep you in your chair?  Do you have a special chair that is hooked up to a cattle prod really adds to the writing experience?

           Inquiring minds want to know...

  1. No tricks. Once I start writing, the only thing that can make me interrupt is my dog, who magically needs to go out whenever I really get into it. Other than that, until I am finished, there I stay.

  2. PS--I guess what I'm saying is, telling me I have to stay and write is like telling me I have to listen to Emmylou. Gee, okay!

    1. Yeah, I figured it was a big "sacrifice"--you allowing wonderful phrases and images flow out of your brain and onto the paper. Yeah, it's rough for you, Fireblossom (ha).

  3. I have no trouble putting my butt in the chair. Nor in keeping it there for a good long time. Not even in making it write. But that's where we diverge. The right stuff is not being written. Blog posts are so much more fun. More informal. Taking those side trips down the road toward Inappropriateville. Flippantly responding to comments.

It seems that I am in need of a Butt Whisperer.

    1. Val--I. Am. Serious. I think your writing is just what the publishers of the "Not Your Mother's Book" series is looking for. There are still lots of titles that are looking for submissions and don't have deadlines yet. Find one that you have an idea about, write a piece, and send it off.

I know about blogs. They are instant gratification. But if you spend ALL your time on your blog, your followers are certainly happy, but you could be reaching a larger audience with your snarkiness. Seriously. They're looking for edgy stuff.

  4. My favorite chair is whichever one happens to be in front of my laptop. Usually that's my home office, but last week it was in my daughter's hospital room (she had surgery) and then in the kitchen at home for convenience. Have laptop, will travel. :)

    1. Lisa--I hope your daughter is feeling better. It sounds like she went through some excruciating pain.

So, I guess you're rewriting CSN's lyrics, huh? Instead of "Love the one you're with," you're singing, "Write in the chair you're in." Now I know the secret to your success...

  5. Today I experienced BIC but got no writing done...I checked out blogs. I did get a terrific idea though, and if I can remember what it was, I'll get back to you.

    1. Well, you had to catch up from the beach. You needed a transition from the sand to your seat, Linda.

  6. I can't tell you how excited I was to read that I could be in the Olympics! I could do synchronized sitting! I have a very comfy computer chair that is literally hot-glued together, but I still think of every excuse I can to get out of it sometimes. I really do think much better walking, so what I need isn't a better chair, but a more mobile computer.

  7. I'm with you, Tammy. I could also compete in the syncronized eating competition.

  8. Actually, I almost never sit when I write. I pace!

    1. Somehow, MZ, I don't think the same technique would work for me as well as it does for you.

  9. Hahahahaha! Seriously, those chickens don't have anything on me and the Beneficent Mr. Hall.

I'm like Val...always in my chair, always writing. Just not always writing what I *should* be writing. Is there a chicken cartoon for that?

    1. Cathy--If you write Doug Savage, he might just create one. He DOES take requests occasionally.

  10. Been in the writing chair today... but I did get up and actually do some exercise too. Go figure.

    1. Lynn--"The writing chair." That brings to my mind an image of a chair that has leg straps so you can't leave, and a high curved back and sides, so you don't get distracted...Is that the kind of chair you sit in when you write?
