LIKE WINE,
WE RARE
(For soul
sisters)
by Jennifer Brown Banks
Defiant
hair,
Undeniable
flair,
“Attitude”
To spare,
Like wine
We rare
Full hips
Mo-than-our-share
lips,
Skin
that’s been
Sun
kissed,
Like wine
We rare
Sassy,
beautiful
And bold
Breaking
the mold,
Our
greatness untold,
Like wine
We rare
Jackie Robinson made my favorite sport better, forever after.
ReplyDeleteps--Sheesh! I'm so used to you asking us about ours, that I see it even when it isn't there! Anyway, in keeping with BHM, Jackie Robinson is my hero, along with anyone who faced the police dogs and fire hoses in the deep south.
DeleteShay--That's the amazing thing. I don't even care for baseball, and yet Jackie Robinson and Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard can suck me and I'm enthralled...
DeleteSuck me in...Suck me in...(Yikes.)
DeleteWhat a dandy poem...love it...Not sure if many thing Langston Hughes is a hero, but I do!
ReplyDeleteBookie,
DeleteThanks so much. Glad you enjoyed!

DeleteHow kind of you. Much appreciation.
Jen, of all the lovely hats you wear, this one is a charming surprise!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sue. Glad to see you here today!
DeleteDamn, this swings. Love it.
ReplyDeleteMama Zen---I know. I can hear it sung, by perhaps someone like Ruthie Foster.
DeleteAnd I "love" the fact that you took the time to let me know. :-) Thanks, Mama Zen. Stay in perfect peace...
DeleteI like the irony in "Our greatness untold." Beautiful, and makes me want to read more.
ReplyDeleteTammy--I agree. This poem is gorgeous.
DeleteTammy and Sioux,
DeleteYour comments inspire me to want to create even more. Thanks for adding to the mix!
Poetry is not really my thing...but I love this!

DeleteWonderful! I had forgotten that poetry was among Jennifer's many talents. Thank you Sioux and Jen for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteKaren--ALL the thanks go to Jen. I merely cut and pasted it into a post.
DeleteIt was indeed my pleasure, Karen. Glad you could stop by and weigh in. :-)
ReplyDelete[Sioux, my dear, I don't think Shay meant to inspire that uncensored reply ... typographical error?]

Marcia--I kept looking at Shay's comments, and then finally looked at mine. Yikes.
DeleteI read this and later realized I forgot to leave a comment.
ReplyDeleteThis succinct and well-worded poem does a wonderful job portraying the strength and beauty of a woman. Well done!
Pat
