Keepers

There are certain things I keep that have great sentimental value. I have a bracelet that was made from my grandparents' and great-grandparents' cufflinks and old watches and cameos. It's irreplaceable.

I have the first rejection letter I received from a publisher. It wasn't a form letter, it was long and it was personal. It's framed, to remind me of when I started on this writerly journey.

This is my Valentine from my granddaughter.
It's definitely a keeper.

I have a copy of the only book my husband and I both fell in love with--George R. R. Martin's Fevre Dream.  (He's proud to let everyone know he's read two other books. One is crappy--according to me--and the other title he doesn't remember.)  Special books hold a special place in my heart.

What are some things you've kept? Sentimental minds wants to know...

  1. I have a plastic coin purse my dad brought me from an overnight business trip he made when I was six. Worthless and brittle, but I can't part with it. I also have an advertising time from each grandpa's line of work...Cudahy lard tin and a DX oil can.

    1. Claudia--I can almost see that coin purse. I can also almost see a story about the purse. It would be a sweet story...

  2. I have my dad's watch, he passed away many years ago, and I have lots and lots of copies of articles I've written. Too many, actually, and I'm trying to get rid of stuff in my house, but it isn't easy!

    1. Mary--My husband said that sometimes our house looks like a paper factory exploded. If you can find a solution, let me know...

  4. I have a note from the youngest Junior Hall: To Mom I Loy you. (I like to think he meant love but I kinda like Loy, too, whatever it is.) In fact, I have a ton of handmade cards and notes and letters from kids and my parents and Mister Man. They're stuck on mirrors, tacked onto walls, stuffed in my wallet. You never know when you're gonna need a little love, right? :-)

  7. I have numerous family keepsakes, including, but not limited to, a wooden picnic basket, a croquet set, a pocket knife, a .22 stock-loading rifle, wedding rings, a jeweled watch, a set of red depression glass dishes, a horse head finger puppet with floppy legs, a Mulan McDonald's Meal Toy...oh and something for myself, a four-foot state of Missouri-shaped banner in red chenille proclaiming State Volleyball Tournament 2nd Place (and I purposefully leave off the year) listing all team players.

Yeah. The hoarder house. That's us.

    1. Val--No wonder you're retiring at such a young age... You're sitting in the catbird's seat, perched on top of all those riches...

  8. Cathy's Hall's made me giggle. I still have a couple of coupons my daughter gave me for Mother's Day many years ago that promise she will perform the chores of "swepping" and "moping."

    1. Tammy--My daughter--when she was a pre-teen--did lots of moping. Swepping, however, is a new term to me. ;)

  9. I have all kinds of treasures! Some from grade school friends. They'd probably be mortified to know I still have "letters" from them. Ha. And of course things from my kids. I love the picture of your granddaughter! So cute. Those kinds of treasures are the best.

  10. As I'm a pack rat, I have kept all manner of things through the years. My attic is full boxes of old letters, cards, etc. Matchbooks and napkins from special dinners with my parents before they passed, notes from my kids and everything they ever made, the collars from beloved pets who have passed---you get the drift. Just looking at the wall in front of my computer screen I have a ceramic starfish given to me by a close friend, a card from my sister, another from a friend, and one handmade by our own Lynn O. There is a Mother's Day essay my youngest daughter wrote about me when she was in kindergarten (I love the lines, "My moms vavrit close are her jameas. My mom likes todo the vacumeclenr by herself. My mom likes to play with me." :) I also have a rock from Red Rock Canyon when my husband and I hiked there once before we got married. My kids will find that one day and be scratching their heads. lol
