Don't Tell

Don't tell my dog that when I call him with a treat, I'm going to reach out quickly and grab his collar so I can get him in. (It takes several tries. He's quite wily.)

Don't tell my students that when I play kickball with them, I always "bunt." (I can run fairly fast, for a short distance, but I can't kick worth a d***.)

Don't tell my hair stylist I'm going to schedule a hair-cut in the next week or so... If she gets advanced warning, she might call in sick. (It's been a loooong time since my hair was dipped, and parts of it are as gray as a rat's back.)

One of my friend's family had a "seven year" rule. Whatever trouble they got into, they couldn't tell their mom about it until 7 years had passed. Their mother figured, if they weren't in prison or dead or hospitalized, it must have not been too serious. Some of the boys in the family actually noted the exact day they could tell their mom, because it was that good of a tale.

What story could you begin with "Don't tell..."?

  1. I don't know what I wouldn't tell. I am an open book to be read by all! If my mouth doesn't say it, my face does!

    1. Claudia--I am the same sometimes. There are times when I want to pull a prank, but my facial expression gives it away.

  2. Oh I hate it when someone tells me something good and I'm not allowed to repeat it, so I try not to do it to anyone else.

    1. Blogoratti--Thank you. Your post on beards was entertaining as well.

  5. So...when I was in 6th or 7th grade, I went to a movie with a boy, after the St. Patrick's Day parade in Savannah. It was kind of a thing, if you had a boyfriend. No big deal. But still, I didn't exactly tell my mom I was going to the movies with a boy (I'm pretty sure I just said "friends" and she assumed "girls"). But years later, I mean THIRTY years later, we're sitting on the porch at Tybee and I happen to mention this movie and this boy thing and Lord, have mercy, you'd have thought I'd broken all the commandments instead of just the one. Which was apparently the one about lying.

So, yeah. Seven years is not nearly long enough for "don't tell" around my house. :-)

    1. Cathy--That--going out to a movie with a boy--was quite tame compared with some of the things I could have told MY mother 30 years later.

I guess you should adhere to the "don't ask, don't tell" philosophy...

  6. Oh, gosh, the "don't tell" thing has come up multiple times since my two older kids moved out, and I know they haven't told me everything. That's okay! I don't want to know! My youngest is an open book. She can't NOT tell me. She'll call her older sister, precede her sharing with "don't tell mom," to which my older daughter laughs and says, "no problem," because she knows Christina will spill the beans herself within the hour. It's like an allergic reaction. She hears my voice and everything tumbles out. lol Fortunately, there's never been anything to make my hair stand on end (my oldest now...ah, the stories!). They all three eventually tell all, despite my begging them to keep me in the dark. Some things I don't need to know. If it's been years ago, for heaven's sake, don't tell me! I'll panic over what MIGHT'VE happened.

I, too, trick my pups with the treat thing. Rigby has smartened up. He just wags his tail and laughs at me before he trots back into the woods to continue his perpetual squirrel hunt. Penny, well...she wakes up with a clean slate every day. She almost always comes for treats and looks surprised when she ends up in the house. :)

    1. Lisa--Yes, some of them get smart super quick. Poor Penny. However, to a dog, any time they get a treat is a perfect moment.

  7. I too keep finding out stuff about my children that I never knew. Good thing, too. I'm sort of impressed those children you know WANT to tell their mother. I have only too many things I'm glad my mother never knew I did. And a few truths I wish she did know!

    1. Tammy--Me,too. There are lots of things I am so glad my parents were in the dark about.

  8. My mother thinks she wants to know, but she doesn't.. Trust me. Plus, I have siblings so I can always tell on them instead. I was the "ggod one" -- no reason to destroy that image now ...
