This summer, I found a tiny antique journal while traveling in France. It's made of some kind of metal. Silver? Something else? I'm not sure. It's a lovely way to remember the trip and is a perfect way to express how important writing is to me.
I'm planning on getting a chain so I can wear it as a necklace.
I love writing. I love arranging and rearranging lines. I love reading others' words. I love getting feedback (constructive criticism) on my writing.
What memento from a trip or an era do you have that you hold close to your heart? Sentimental minds want to know...
What a sweet find! Perfect. My finds are often tourqouise jewelry I tote home from the Southwest.
ReplyDeleteClaudia--I like turquoise as well... and straight from the Southwest means it's the best turquoise.
DeleteSioux, that is the perfect treasure for you. Did it have anything written in it?
ReplyDeleteLinda--THAT was a detail I should have included. I just edited the post. See---this is proof that two (or three or four or five) heads are better than one.
DeleteNope. Not a thing, although the pages have a stained corner.
That is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteMama Zen--It IS pretty. And I was lucky, because it could have been easily overlooked. It was in a locked case, mixed in with a bunch of other things.
DeleteThat's so cool! I wonder what kind of writing ju-ju is attached to it. Hopefully not writer's block because it is unwritten-in!
ReplyDeleteMemento? I have a heather-pink T-shirt with red-banded sleeves that says "Alaska Yukon Brew." I got in on a trip to visit my uncle in Alaska the summer before my senior year. I wore it under my volleyball uniform for good luck. Must have worked. We took second place in the state tournament.
However...always the benchwarmer, never the star. The other gals had T-shirts with stuff like "Panama Red." That's Val. A common alcoholic when the cool kids were into cannabis.
Val--I am the anti-athlete, so I never had a lucky shirt or a lucky pair of shoes or a lucky set of shin guards. You're lucky to have been able to bask in that light. I was never a star... never even a benchwarmer. Sigh.
DeleteNothing. I live entirely in the moment. Do you have anything to eat? LOOK, A SQUIRREL!
ReplyDelete(did I mention that this is Skittles, writing this?)
Skittles--If you were HERE, I'd take all your dog treats and wrap them in bacon. Now, go back to your mommy and demand the same level of treats from her. You deserve it.
DeleteA serendipitous find! I expect it to speak to you about its origins so you may write a story about it. That delightful treasure may have carried coded messages to the French Resistance, or was perhaps gifted to a promising poet by her dearest admirer. *le sigh!*
ReplyDeleteMy dearest mementos are pieces of jewelry that belonged to my mother and grandmother. One is the most fiery opal I've ever seen, surrounded by tiny diamonds. I brought it to a jeweler to have the stone reset and he refused to do it. The heat required to bend the prongs would do irreparable damage to the stone. The ring may be admired, but never worn. It was my grandmother's, gifted to her by my grandfather sometime in the early 1900s. I'll treasure it always.
Lisa--
DeleteI have a bracelet my mother had made for me--it's made out of cuff links and old watches from my grandparents. It's wearable, but I only do so on special occasions.
You should read "All the Light We Cannot See" by Doerr. It's about the French resistance and is about a stone that is very valuable. (It's written like a poet at times, and the plot is extremely engaging.)
I imagine that ring has stories to tell... and you are just the one to tell them. ;)
What a beautiful treasure! I'm sure that all sorts of story ideas are brewing in that wonderful head of yours! I received what I thought was a blank journal from a friend who picked it up at a garage sale. As I was fanning through the pages, there was some writing on one page. Bam! Inspiration for a story! You never know!
ReplyDeleteNoExcuses--That is a phenomenal gift--a used journal. You can take that in any direction you want.
DeleteI hope you're working on sharing your writing with someone. Let me know...
How very lovely, Sioux. I think it will be a perfect reminder of your trip, and of your writing passion.
ReplyDeletePat
Critter Alley
Pat--I was lucky to find it. (Are you enjoying your retirement? she said with a flash of jealousy.)
DeleteOh, I love that little notebook-such a treasure! And to think how many people passed it by--makes me think it was there, waiting for you. And now you must live up to it!
ReplyDeleteHmmm...a memento from a trip. With me, it's always scents. Soaps, shampoos, Sea 'n Ski suntan lotion. Every scent tells a story (but not necessarily a story I can share. ;-)
Cathy--The idea of scents to remind you of a trip is a great idea. (And of course, I'd like to hear the unshareable stories ;)
DeleteWhat a cool keepsake! I still have a necklace made of strung spices and seeds that I bought in Grenada years ago. I've never worn it or anything - and trying to use the spices at this point would be scary - but it hangs inside my pantry and still makes me smile.
