Size DOES Matter

The size of my car once was an issue. Or rather, the turning radius of my car. I thought since it was a small car, it could make a sharp right turn around a decorative length of fence. If I was riding a bicycle, I could have made that turn.
       But I wasn't. I was in a car.
Now, I have a couple of long dents to remind me of that afternoon...

Here's a moshpit of golden retriever puppies--Radar's litter (he was one of 11
surviving puppies). He was so tiny then.

Here's a close-up right after Radar was chosen as our new family member...

Here's Radar now... all 78 pounds of him.

The size of my feet used to matter to me. As a 12-year old, I wore size 10--and then soon size 11--shoes. There weren't hip-looking shoes in the olden days that were also big as boats. Now, I simply look for shoes that are comfortable and I don't care that my toes enter the room a few minutes before the rest of me does...

My WIP is now up to 83,000 and some change. It started as a NaNoWriMo winner, was shredded back down to 0, and is now getting closer to a finished draft. And as I nudge taser myself into working on it, I also want to nudge along some writer friends. (Most of you know who you are.)

Donna Volkenannt. Get busy. Why are you reading this post, when you could be working on your novel? Tammy. You have a best-selling book that is unfolding during WWWP critique sessions. Get on it. Lynn. It sounds like you've got some great priorities to ensure you get your book finished, which is marvelous, because it's going to be a gorgeous book. Linda--you have had such interesting experiences so far. Your memoir would be a page-turner. Convince Bill to be your typist (and your personal chef and your publicist) , and you can dictate it. Val. You need to get crackin' on a collection of your stories. Shay--How about another book of your poetry? Pat. Get it done. You're retiiiired. Stop those crazy-fun trips and hunch over your keyboard. Marcia--Are you hiding a book from the rest of us? Cathy Hall and Lisa Ricard Claro, you don't need no prodding. (Cathy has the Korean market sewn up, and Lisa is on her 89th book (it comes out on January 30.)

And now I'm headed to bed...

  1. LOL Great post! I can't stop those crazy-fun trips. I'm addicted! (Plus I love to people watch. Shouldn't that be an Olympic sport?) Thanks for the encouragement though.

    1. Pat--I actually have two blogger friends named Pat--and both of you like to travel. I love to people watch, too. If it WAS an Olympic sport, I'd get at least a bronze...

  2. Your friends (and Radar) are lucky to have you in their lives to push them forward!

    1. Claudia--Howboutchou? What project do YOU need to be prodded about?

Thanks, but I think I'm lucky with who I have in my life--with the two-legged ones and the four-legged ones...

  3. Well, I was SURE you had read last night's post and were fixin' to sic me. :-)

Good on you, with 83,000 words! This is the year for Sioux's opus, I can just feel it! (Or maybe that's you, breathing down my neck, pushing me onward to bigger and better challenges. Whatever. May we all get a move on in 2016.)

    1. Cathy--But I haven't cornered the Korean market, so I will never be able to breathe down your neck...

  4. HFFF...83,000 words! When are we going to read an excerpt? Your nudge is exactly what makes me want to write. Your fur baby is such a honey. What do you think about a writer girl's road trip?

  5. 89? Please tell me you don't teach math! It's 3, actually, with #4 in the works, although due to a lot of issues from Sept-Dec it sat mostly idle, so this post is exactly the boot in the britches I need to get back to work.

PS: I'm with Linda. Show us an excerpt!
PSS: Thanks for the doggie pics. Always a smile generator!

    1. Lisa--What colorful language you use! The boot in the... well, I cannot repeat the next word you used in your comment, but I'm offended by it.

      Deeply offended.

There's a fourth one? In the same series? I am even more impressed.

An excerpt? It's such a weird piece, I don't know if that would work. But thanks for expressing some interest...

  6. I'm NOT retired yet, not until September 30th! But another book may be doable. After all, my last book sold 5 copies!

    1. Shay--I KNOW it sold more copies than 4.

I didn't know you're retiring this Fall. I am sure you'll enjoy endless play sessions with Skittles, along with enjoying the long stretches of time that you can spend writing.

  7. But I keep discovering a new story every day! Or TWO! They, like Newman's mail, never stop.

Now I'm trying to get the image of your feet entering the room ahead of you, in comfortable mis-matched Crocs, out of my head, with hopes of replacing it with that sweet pile of puppies.

    1. Val--And to really torment you, perhaps sometime soon I will blog about my toenails and the trimming of the aforementioned nails.

  8. Hi Sioux,
Thanks for the nudge. I need it.
My feet are also large--size 8 when I was in high school, but now I'm up to a size 10. My dad used to tease me about having built in skis. Like you, I look for comfortable shoes. And you're right I should be working on my novel rather than visiting blogs, but it's so much fun to catch up with my writing friends.
Keep going on your WIP. I'm impressed with your word count--and you work full time!
Hope you have a peaceful and prosperous new year filled with many, many words!

    1. Donna--You're welcome. You've done the same for me in the past. My grandmother used to say, "Think how tall you'd be if they didn't turn so much under for feet."

And I hope 2016 is the year we BOTH finish our WIP. I would love to read a novel you've written...

    3. Thanks, Sioux. Love your grandma's quote.
I'm hoping both of us will have finished our novels this year. Here's to plugging away one word and sentence at a time.
