Sequels Are Sometimes...

I loved the movie Fargo. With that movie's last scene (it was close to the very end), Fargo became not only a place but a verb.

"I'm gonna Fargo you," meant my husband was getting dangerously close to getting put into the wood chipper.

The series has been out for several years, and I resisted... until recently. The first season was okay (but had spectacular music). I loved the second season (also phenomenal music--Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" was featured on one episode).

This coincides with me reading Barbara Robinette Moss' memoir Fierce. Her first one, Change Me Into Zeus's Daughter, is one of my favorite books. (It has the most compelling beginning. Seriously.)

Initially, I got Fierce simply because of the author. I doubted it would be as good. However, this memoir picks up during her adult years and it's wonderful.

So, do as I say, not as I do. Don't be so resistant of a sequel or a remake or a second novel/memoir that you miss out on something wonderful...

        Some of them are great.

And if you need to kill your inner critic, read my post on The Muffin.

  1. You're tempting me to become a Fargo fan, especially if they ever feature my favorite Jethro Tull song, Locomotive Breath!

The book sounds good. I'll add it to my ever-growing TBR list.

    1. Pat--I feel terrible. Once I read your comment, I wondered. Was it "Aqualung" or "Locomotive Breath"? (I love them both.)

I misspoke. It WAS "Locomotive Breath" on episode 7, season 2.

Yikes. I will probably be drummed out of the Jethro Tull fan club. (My son is named after two famous Ians. One is Ian Anderson.)

  2. Fargo has Jethro Tull? Okay, now I have to watch it.

    1. Jono--The seasons are stand-alones. I wasn't as enthralled with the first season as I was with the second. (And along with Jethro Tull, the music choices are quirky and fitting at the same time.)

  3. Not a Fargo fan. No reason. Saw the movie.

I loved the book "Plainsong" by Kent Haruf. I tried to follow up with "Eventide," but just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll try again. I have plenty of time on my hands now...

    1. Val--You don't love "Fargo"? No love of the chipper?

I looked up that book. You know he has a bunch out. Maybe "Eventide" is one of his mediocre ones...

  4. I've been a Tull freak since I was in high school. "Minstrel In The Gallery" is my favorite song, but my favorite album is Stand Up. I must have 7 or 8 cd's plus a boat load on my ipod.

As for Fargo, I'll watch anything with William H. Macy in it. I will have to check out that memoir--I love the title of the first one!

    1. Shay--It has a beginning that I use with my students. The first page or two--if a person can read that and resist reading the rest... well, they don't have a curious thought in their head or a heart in their chest.

    2. Shay--I forgot to mention--His wife is no slouch (acting-wise) either. She is brilliantbrilliantbrilliant in the first (and third) season of "American Crime." (Each of them stand alone, too.)

  5. I have read some sequels and have been very disappointed. Others were as outstanding as the first. Just depends, but you have to at least give it a try.

  6. Sequels...it depends on whether you're talking books or movies. I usually enjoy book sequels, because if I liked the first book enough to read the second one, the usual reason is the characters. They become like old friends and it's nice to see how they're doing, even if the second book isn't specifically about them. It's different with movies. Movie sequels are usually not as good as the first movie, though there are some notable exceptions, such as the Back to the Future movies. I didn't enjoy them equally, but I did love spending time with Doc and Marty. :)

    1. Lisa--I'm surprised you didn't mention your series of books, when commenting on characters that readers fall in love with. You need to promote your work whenever possible. ;)

I agree with you when it comes to book sequels versus movie sequels. Getting to spend more time with some favorite book characters is delightful... Having to spend time watching a movie sequel when it's obvious the producers are just interested in milking it for all the money they possible can--well, that's no fun.

  7. Thanks for the advice, Sioux. I should do that, but I hate coming off like it's always "Buy my books, buy my books!" But you did bring up a good point. I wrote the Fireflies the way I did because those are the same types of books I enjoy reading.
