What is That? It's So Scary Looking!

I follow the Muffin, so when my picture appeared on my sidebar (a not-very-complimentary photo of a woman who is notoriously not-very-photogenic), I shrieked. At least inwardly a little.

I'm doing a guest post there today, so if you're stuck in the same writing box, perhaps it is time to change things up a bit. Like a pitcher throwing a change-up...Not only will the change surprise your writing friends, but you might discover some pleasant surprises as well.

Please check it out, and please leave a comment if you're so moved to. (Cathy C. Hall, the baseball bit was just for you.)

Also, I'm in love with helping verbs and adjectives these days. Why? Helping verbs and adding an extra descriptive word here and there adds to my word count. Right now, with NaNoWriMo I'm at 14,000 words. I haven't crashed and burned yet, but there's still 21 more days to go.

On my next post, I'm going to share a reject card I got. Not a letter...a card.

  1. I went over to the Muffin and saw, but I refuse to do word verification, so I'll comment here. Indeed, switching it up works beautifully for me. If I'm stuck--like right now, for example--I will try form, or rhyme, to get myself going, since i normally write free verse. It often unlocks the wheels.

    1. Liar, liar! You never get stuck! But thanks for at least faking it to help the rest of us save face. ;)

  2. I usually try to write a poem when I'm stuck. Sometimes, all it takes is a quick look through a box of photos to get the creative juices started.

    1. The famous Kim--oh that's right, the INfamous Kim ;)

I can see how that would work. The different rhythm of poetry, the concern over line breaks. The succinctness. All of that would jar loose the creativity.

Thanks for the comment, Kim. It was great to meet you at the workshop.

  3. Silly! You are quite breathtaking.

I am usually a night-time blogger. I'm wondering if it's too late. But I'm going to throw propriety out the window, and caution to the wind, and come right out and say it: "Top of the Muffin to you!"

    1. Val--

So THAT'S why there is a sharp intake of breath, and bugged-out eyes when people first encounter me...because I'm breathtaking...Thanks for the explanation.

And I'm Rececca DeMornay. So thanks for the top, because I hate those stumps...

  4. Love your Muffin post, and the picture looks great. If you're as adorable in person as you are in the pic it is no wonder your students adore you (and I'm sure they do). I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. Sometimes getting started is tough, but once the toes go in, the body is sure to follow.

    1. Lisa--Thanks. I LOVE your quote: "Once the toes go in, the body is sure to follow." That is great advice that can be applied to so many things.

  5. Pearl--

Lovely? I KNOW you're not talking about my photo. ;)

  6. So I zipped over to The Muffin to catch up on WOW! reading and who shows up? Why, it's Sioux, talking about Bigfoot. You know I have a Bigfoot story, right? Never sold it, but I truly love my Bigfoot story. In fact, I'm kinda crazy about Bigfoot in general. Not the smell, but the *idea* of Bigfoot.

I feel like I may have digressed here from my point...;-)

Kudos to you for stepping out the box--I'm a BIG believer in going where the muse takes you--and sharing your wisdom over at The Muffin. And thanks for the baseball reference, too. You can never have enough baseball in life, right? ;-)

  7. Cathy--Since I am so NOT into sports, I can't really agree about that last statement but you're right on the mark about the importance of being willing to where the muse takes you.

And hey--I like 'em tall, dark and hairy. Don't knock Bigfoot until you've met him. ;)

  8. Sioux, your picture is cute, but you're even cuter in person. Loved the post you wrote over at The Muffin.

  9. Hi Sioux,
I'm late visiting blogs, but I'm popping over to check it out now.
