Why We Need Friends

Two things happened recently that made me realize--for the millionth time this month--how important friends are.

I was reading a post by Linda O'Connell. She mentioned thinking her father worked for the WCC. Immediately, it brought to mind a summer I worked for the YCC, and shazam! I had a story to tell that had been buried for several decades.

Writers need each other. We can't write in a vacuum. We need our friends' eyes, we need our friends' feedback, we need our friends' shoulders...

And then a few weeks ago, our dumb-as-dirt-but-sweet-as-sugar Golden Retriever had made a mess of himself with his tongue. Some hotspots meant Foley would have to wear the "cone of shame," and he did...until Lisa Ricard Claro suggested a Boo Boo Loon. It keeps the dog from getting to stitches/hotspots but does not obstruct their view or hinder their hearing. (It also serves as a pillow when they sleep.) My husband, who spares no expense when it comes to Prince Foley, ordered a Boo Boo Loon for him; our dog is much happier now.

"Thank god you came along, Lisa," barked Foley.

What was something a friend of yours did for you recently?

  1. Aww cut it out. Put one of those collars on me and maybe I can stretch my neck so it looks like I have one. I actually thought he was in a Concentration camp. I'm glad my goofiness spawned a post for you.

  2. Linda--What a great idea. Maybe if I wore a Boo Boo Loon, people would stare at THAT and wouldn't notice my poochy gut?

I am often surprised at how talking (or blogging) about someone else's writing jogs our memory or causes us to re-examine our own writing. Thanks again.

  3. Yay! I'm so happy you purchased a BBL for that very handsome Foley. Those cones are just awful, so I know Foley appreciated your expenditure on his behalf. Such an easy fix to ease the emotional stress of our furry kids. :) So happy to have helped!

    1. Lisa--You don't by chance get a percentage for all the referrals you throw their way, do you?

      Thanks again.

  4. I need my friend's eyes to read that small print! Bloggy friend Linda did me a solid recently. And in real life, my teaching buddy, Mabel, she who shook hands with Wernher von Braun, gave me four wooden ramps with metal surfaces, suitable for testing potential and kinetic energy with Hot Wheels cars.

You, Madam, have also encouraged me, perhaps cajoled me, and some might even say browbeaten me to whip me into top writing form. You are all the road beneath my wheels.

    1. Val--I hope we're a smooth, new road and not one full of potholes and loose rock and oil stains. If I can't be a new, young woman--I'd like at least to be a new roadway...

  5. Well you know that Sioux girl, she's always doing something for me... you just did - and thank you... as well as the rest of the WWWPs, that Queen Chick you mentioned being one.

  6. Lynn--That Sioux girl...You have to keep an eye on her.

YOU could give lessons on how to be a great friend, Lynn. Seriously.

  8. That boo boo loon is such an improvement!

Something a friend of mine did for me recently was to call me "Val" on my blog! It was someone named....Sioux!

  9. Good friends are priceless treasures.

After I posted on Facebook about how my dog stresses out during storms, a friend wrote about a thunder shirt for dogs. I haven't bought one yet, but the next time we had a storm, I put my dog's orange hunting vest on him and he seemed calmer.

    1. Donna--I agree. Good friends ARE treasures.

Hey, if the hunting vest works, that's great. I know a couple of storm-phobic dogs who actually come into the kitchen and wait to get their thunder shirts put on.
