Disconnecting

This graphic makes me wonder. When we don't have access to the internet, to social media... do we feel like we're imprisoned?

Or, are we imprisoned by our constant need to check our email, our posts, our Facebook whatevers? Do we feel anxious and deprived if we can't connect?

I am disconnecting for a couple of weeks. It's by choice. I'm going to be doing some things with friends and family, and I want to be present in the present.

By the time the middle of July rolls around, I'll reconnect. I promise.

  2. I do miss internet when we cruise out of the country, only because I am hopeful of an acceptance. Happened to me once. They asked for a photo to accompany a story, and because I did not reply in time they used a stock photo of "me" as a different nationality. I laughed when I opened the publiciation.

    1. Linda--Yes, I hoped that I would get something emailed to me while I was gone. Alas, I was wrong.

  3. Oh, Sioux, you've hit a real nerve with me here. I'll quote another author who said social media and the 24-hour news cycle is "a pox on our society." I believe that 100%. The digital world of instant news and constant communication is a false world and a time suck. I took a break as well, from my blog, from Facebook, from Twitter, and Instagram. Trouble is, as an author, we have to STAY connected, constantly keeping our voice out there and being active. Frankly, it's exhausting, and I'd rather be writing. *sigh* Giving myself a few more weeks of freedom from the internet, and then will start up again as it's part of my job as a writer . . . but I don't have to like it! ;)

    1. Lisa--Now, I'm on the verge of getting into Instagram. And creating a website. And doing Facebook on a more regular basis. However, I will never be hooked on Facebook. I just don't get the allure... So I totally understand where you're coming from.

Enjoy what's left of your break.

  5. My comp died and it took me 5 days to start missing the internet. I'm just not as into it as I once was.

    1. Shay--You could wow us even if you carved your poems on cave walls. (Not that I'm suggesting that. It would be brutal on your fingernails...)
