Vive la Difference!

My favorite place on this planet is southern France. The meals last for three hours (lunch) or more (dinner) and there is a sense of joy that is at the core of everything they do--baking bread, making salad dressing, setting the coffee table for aperitif (a set time for drinks and appetizers before dinner). When I retire, and when I can convince my husband to discontinue his homebody-ways, I will move to France (if only in my dreams).

This is a path we took, surrounded by the Pyreenes Mountains.

This is a potato, onion and cheese dish--the specialty of a humble restaurant that we dined at
before hiking to the base of the mountains. It was a work of art with every mouthful...

Another view of these gorgeous mountains...

A story about when I took my son to France is in the upcoming Publishing Syndicate's Not Your Mother's Book On Travel. Would you go topless on a beach, with your teenaged son running in and out of the ocean? Would you stalk Johnny Depp all across the rolling hills of Saint Gauzens (Okay, that didn't happen, but only because my Johnny Depp-o-meter was not giving me the accurate latitude and longitude.)  Would you force your son to do something that caused permanent psychological scarring to his psyche?

You will have to buy the book to find out how ooh-la-la this lady went. And the book? It will be on sale March 26...

  1. I want a potato, onion, and cheese dish. Or perhaps I should say, "pomme de terre, oignon, et fromage plat."

If you move, won't you have to buy a new wardrobe of berets and those striped black-and-white shirts? Oh. I forgot. You will go topless.

    1. Shay, I'm assuming you're speaking about the potato creation, and not "the dish" I was 10 years ago...;)

    1. Kathy--Just the bread alone is worth the trip. The gorgeous scenery is icing on the cake.

  6. Congratulations, I can't wait to read it (or did I already? Ha, my brain!) You know we could start something here in the US that mimicks the French... speaking more on the line of food. :-)

    1. Lynn--I don't think I brought this story to WWWP. Luckily, it kind of wrote itself.

And having more leisurely lunches and dinner here in America would be wonderful...

  8. Ahh...France! Never been, would love to go. On one of our cruises we had a beach day, and our beach was next to a nude beach. The nudies apparently didn't get the memo about "theirs" and "ours" because they strolled freely. And I do mean freely, in the, er, free-est sense of the word. My youngest daughter was only about 6 then, and she still remembers the shock of looking up from her sandcastle to see a naked older couple watching her stack sand. She never said anything at the time, just smiled and went back to her sandcastle. But boy did I get questions later!

    1. Yes, your daughter learned an important lesson: Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I would have loved to hear what you and your husband said in the car as explanation.

  9. Congratulations on yet another publication! Can't wait to read it. And if my math is correct, that's 6+ hours on meals, which sounds good to me - especially after looking at that delightful-looking cheese dish. Yum. Can I come visit you when you move there?

    1. Yes, hours on meals and don't forget the wine.

Of course. When I move there, I'll host a twice-annual writing retreat for my peeps.

    1. Donna--Thanks. However, I am not a winner of an INTERNATIONAL writing contest.

You are still one of the writers I bow down to...
