A Dog's Life

This is Foley. He is like some women like their men: blonde, fast and not-too-bright.

Twice a day--every day, he eats the same thing, and gobbles it with relish (and mustard and ketchup, too). When he comes in from outside, he's always hopeful that he'll get a treat. When he's "relaxing" on the couch, he's lovin' it. When he's hurtling after the ball like a bullet, he's focused on only that...

As a writer, I need to be optimistic that I'll get an acceptance, each time I submit a piece. I need to relish the time I read, or chat with friends but when I'm writing, I need to zero in on that and put my blinders on, to keep everything else at bay.

What lessons have you learned from your dog or cat (or iguana, or guinea pig)?

  1. Watch where you roll around. You might end up stinky and wishing you hadn't done that. ;)

  2. Janel--Thanks for the advice. If it smells like it, and looks like it, it probably IS --it!

  3. Oh Foley is a cutie little stinker. Stinker is my nickname for all cutie animals... well humans too. My cat keeps me focused on keeping organized (ha) because he likes to eat/tear up paper, I have to keep all my writing secure. Just yesterday he tore off the corner of a card that was getting ready to be mailed. Errrr... and all because I wasn't giving him attention... so I guess we have to find a balance with everything.

  4. My witty come-backs fail me today. Could be because a dog keeps draping herself across my chest and blocking my view of the computer ....... Persistance, perhaps. She wants my undivided attention and will not stop until she gets it!

  5. Hi Sioux,
    Foley is a sweetie.
What I've learned from my dog: show your enthusiasm, love unconditionally, and be loyal, especially to those who love you.

  6. Bosco has taught me that the two most exciting and gratifying times of day are: being reunited after having been apart, and dinner.

  7. Find a ray of sunshine and lie down when the going gets rough.

  8. The only pets I have now are pond fish. They don't teach me a thing about writing, but it is relaxing to watch them. Wait! They teach me fluidity! Foley is a handsome guy.

  9. What a handsome boy! Foley looks so regal. I learn ooh-gobs of stuff from my pets every day. My dogs are waggy-tails, their backsides in perpetual motion, unless they're asleep. They are full of fun and optimism. Every moment is joyful. My cats remind me to be curious and bold, and that there is great joy to be had in snuggling into a warm, sunny spot for an afternoon nap. :)

  10. Oh I just love Foley! Look at him posing so handsomely, with paw over paw. Awwwww. Are you still his foster mom? He looks as sweet and lovable as Vern.

  11. I learned that if I chew hard enough, the stuffing will come out of any new toy within 23 hours of getting it.

  12. Lynn--Foley is definitely a stinker. He chews any paper or pillow or shoe (only my shoes) that he can get a hold of.

Kathy--Yes, they are insistent on getting attention, aren't they!

Donna--I agree. Loyalty is what we adore about dogs.

Fireblossom--Dinner is a highlight of my daily life as well.

Linda--Yes, I love to sleep (or nap) when things get rough as well.

Tammy--Thanks (for Foley). The problem: he KNOWS he's a good-looking guy.

Lisa--Do you think people would consider ME cute if I wagged my backside like dogs do? I think not.

Becky--No, we adopted him a couple of years ago. He's now ours--for better and worse. ;)

Val--Are those toys or restraints you're chewing up?

  13. What great lessons everyone posted. We used to have the sweetest dog. She was so loving and loyal to us, but anyone us, watch out.

  14. Liza Bean Bitey (of the Minneapolis Biteys) has taught me the importance of grabbing all possible naps and to never underestimate the power of shrimp cocktail.
