Musical Memory Lane...and Back-of-the-Book Blurb # 66

At writing critique night this week, Lynn shared an early concert memory. (I think it was her first concert.) Her vignette was more about an awful prospective boyfriend than the Ozark Mountain Daredevils concert... but it brought back a flood of memories.

On the way back home, Kim and I talked about our first concert. Kim's first was Crosby, Stills and Nash. (That made me extremely jealous. CS & N was one of my favorite groups. They still are.) I'm not sure if my first one was a Richie Havens-John Sebastian combo (there was a third singer, but I don't remember who it was) in Wash U's quadrangle, or whether Cat Stevens was my first.

I do know who ruined me for concerts. Harry Chapin.

Harry Chapin's concerts were intimate, poignant and hilarious. A true storyteller, he could weave human suffering into a few verses and a chorus better than everybody else. He didn't have much of a voice, but what a songwriter he was. He'd alternate a song about a dry-cleaner who aspired to be an opera singer... only to have his dreams dashed to the ground by critics... with a song about a truckload of bananas that meets a horrible end. And he could do it with an incredible wryness.

In-between songs, he'd make jokes about the other musicians on stage. It was good-natured back-and-forth banter. They gave as well as they took.

This is a song that hardly ever made it on
the radio waves. Be patient--watch the
whole thing. Chapin shares four different
                             endings... and they're amusing...

What was your first concert? Leave a comment and share a memory. I'd love to hear about it.

And now onto the business of the book blurb.

Look at the photo below. That is the cover of your book. You choose the genre. Is it a nonfiction piece? Is it a romance between a fellow primate and his selfie stick? You decide.

Write an enticing blurb--150 words or less. (The title doesn't count in the word count.) Blurbs are those enticing bits that prod you into buying the book. Sometimes they're on the back cover of the book. Sometimes they're on the inside front cover. What they always try to do is lure you into purchasing the book.

Lisa Ricard Claro was the original creator of this writing challenge. We don't know what she's doing these days. She moved to Florida and with the piles of money she's made from her novels. She's probably hired a couple of cute cabana boys. Perhaps that is what's keeping her busy... (If one of them looks anything like Viggo Mortensen or Benecio del Toro, I hope Lisa at least lets me visit so I can gape and drool a bit.)

Include your blurb in a blog post. Include a link to this post. Also, link your post to Mr. Linky. Mr. Linky is easy. If you've never done it, you'll be impressed with how simple he is. And then, check out the other blurb(s). It's interesting to see the different directions writers take, given the same photo.

Here's the book cover, along with my blurb:

Manny’s Revenge
Manny was tired of being stared at. Manny was especially weary of people who’d think they were clever by looking at him through the glass and making weird noises while they scratched their armpits and jumped around.
Enough. Manny the gorilla was mad as heck, and he wasn’t going to take it anymore. When the next group of idiots gathered to gape, Manny swung from his rope onto the top edge of the wall. Reaching out, he grabbed one of their cameras and gracefully swung back to the floor of his enclosure.
Looking into the glass, he saw himself—certainly a more handsome primate than that idiot in the spandex bike shorts and the fanny pack who’d just waddled past.
Is that what people were doing with these things—admiring themselves?

Manny decided to turn the tables on the foolish spectators… and he already knew what he was going to do first. (150 words)

For those writers who'd like to work ahead, here is the photo for next week's blurb:

Pay It Forward

This is an idea that Becky Povich is passing along. Someone before her passed the baton to Becky, and someone before them put out the offer and so on...  I think Kevin Spacey originated it.  (His "gift" was a home-recorded CD of Benecio Del Torro and himself doing duets during the time when they were filming The Usual Suspects.  I wish I was one of those lucky five!)

Becky proposed posting about the gifts we all have, and hopefully, participants will join in.  We are writers. But that is not our only talent. This is our chance to pass on to others--directly---our gifts.

So, if you are interested, post a comment here to let me know.  The first five who say, "I do," (I do want to participate) will receive a handmade gift from me.  (I'm getting one from Becky. How about that!)  And if you agree to play along and pay it forward, you'll post the proposal on your blog and make a gift for five people, who will post it on their blog and send handmade gifts to five other people, and so will it spread and expand, like the ripples in a lake.

It is up to you what you consider a "homemade gift."  It could be a photo you've taken. It might be a framed poem written by you.  You could unwrap store-bought rice krispie treats and press M and Ms into them.  You could take your eyebrow hairs that have been plucked out, and you could weave them in a bracelet.  The sky is the limit!

            Let the fun begin...

After all, we should have some joy in our lives as we catch our reflection in the mirror and weep at the sight of our "pudding-bag-tied-in-the-middle bodies." (Pauline's great phrase---see below)

And before I end this, I'd like to thank my newest four followers. Thanks, Not the Rockefellers and lightverse.  If you have a blog, please let me know and I will include a link.

Nana Jo has a blog.  She has a lovely post about the reality of romance called "Late Roses."  Romance ain't just for the young and foolish...

Pauline has not one, but two blogs. Her jaw-dropping line above came from her more humorous blog.  It seems she has not actively posted on it for a while, but read through the posts that are there. She treats aging with humorous stories (even though it makes our bellies jiggle and our laughlines get more pronounced as we read them).  Pauline, could you merge the two blogs?  You have an amazing gift for deft levity!

Her other blog is more serious and introspective. If you'd like to go snow-shoeing (from the comfort of your familyroom chair) check out her January 17 post entitled "Come for a Walk With Me."  Pauline dug deep into her belief system as she dug up snow in her January 21 post called "You Never Know."

I will end with a quote that Pauline included in her most recent post:

"In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary."--Aaron Rose

A Fantasy Christmas

Every day in December,
She'd blog if she remembered,
But last night a puddle of drool
Reminded her that hormones still rule!

She got up this morning, glanced in the mirror
and screamed without warning...
Her mustache hairs had gone wild---
They were white and wiry and looked riled
up.  "Why is aging so rough?
My breasts have grown long enough!
This Christmas season, I want no jewels,
Nor do I want any kitchen tools.
No chic, new, stylish clothes
Or even cute socks that warm my toes.

Instead I'd like a fleet of personal trainers---
And who would they be?  That's a no-brainer!
Viggo (Mortensen) to run with me across the plains,
Johnny (Depp), on his guitar he'd strum
While I thump on my belly like a big bass drum.

Mark (Harmon) would walk with me from here to St. Elsewhere,
and Benecio (Del Toro) would teach me not to care--
Not being able to stop traffic with my looks
is less important that nibbling on chocolate while reading a great book.

So, this Christmas, all I want are my two front teeth
(to stay put, 'cause my gums are receding)
And a band of brave men--that's all that I'm needing..."
