Finding What's Missing

Oh, many things are missing these days. My youth. My skin's elasticity. My once-perky parts' perkiness. Viggo from the newest Hobbitt movie. (No Viggo? What's the point of watching it?)

And this morning, I found part of a rough draft went AWOL. Last night, I guess I fell asleep in front of my computer. When I shut my laptop down, I must have neglected to save the work I had done. (Hopefully the stuff I "recreate" will suck less than what I forced out last night.)

In some of my pieces, what's missing is easy to spot. The beginning needs more oomph. The ending is abrupt or lame. Too few ellipsis. (Yeah, like that could ever happen with me.) Some rocky transitions that need smoothing out.

Other times, everything seems tight and well-crafted...but editors have a different (wrong) opinion. It's a shame that so many publishers and editors make sooooo many mistakes (she said with her tongue jammed firmly into her cheek).

What are you missing these days? (You interpret it any way you choose.)

And since I did watch a 27  3  hour movie, waiting for just a glimpse of Viggo, here's a parting picture...

  1. I am missing an almost-new year-old blue mechanical pencil that must have fallen out of my pocket when I went to the principal's office (of my own volition, I might add) to bring up four different issues second hour on the first day of End of Course testing. I think he might have been a bit preoccupied, though I was welcomed as congenially as always, and I am thankful that I did not flip that pencil out, upon removing my bifocals from the same pocket, and nail him between the eyes.

I am also missing an internal editor.

    1. And Val, we're so glad your internal editor has been handcuffed and gagged and crammed into your closet. We ALL benefit...

  2. I miss my daughters - no, they're not lost, they're just not here, or not close enough for frequent visits.

I miss the me who cleaned...that person isn't doing her job while I work from home, and my husband sure as hell isn't doing it either (though he said he would). I miss that he doesn't have a job so I could be a stay-at-home slacker. And I miss the numbers that used to be our bank balance.

    1. Kim--But apparently you're following Tim Gunn's advice and you're making "it work." You're able to take your "minuses" and transform them into writing fodder.

(And I miss my daughter--who's in Florida right now but not for much longer, and I miss our bank balance too.)

  3. One thing is certain. I'm glad I didn't miss this post. LOL In real big-girl life I miss my Mom and Dad, all the time, every day. In writing life I miss time and focus. I've not accomplished much, not submitted much this year. Just going in too many different directions, which makes me crazy. I guess that means I also miss my sanity!

    1. Lisa--I just recently lost my mom, so now I'm part of the oldest generation. The loss of parents IS felt every day...

Perhaps you and I could have a long-distance bon voyage party for our sanity? I also feel pulled in too many different directions. You'd think that would make me thin and stretched out, but alas, no...

  4. Sioux you know how to say what's on my mind! Are you creeping around in my head? I miss the youthful body I used to have, the sharp-as-a-tack mind that could spit details out on command.

    1. Linda--

Sadly, the only thing I can do "on command" these days is become gassy--no matter what I eat.

Do you think it's an "age thing" or something far less insidious?

  5. I am definitely missing something, but I can't put my finger on just what it is!

    1. Mama Zen--But what I am NOT missing is a fabulous book of poetry, by three incredibly gifted poets. I got my copies, and plan to maybe post an interview with Shay (and you, if you'd be able to).

      It's a gem of a book.

  6. Is there a world-wide shaving razor shortage? Just asking.

  7. I'm missing some fabulous work (surely it must have been?) that I thought I was dictating on my phone but didn't really know how to dictate on my phone. I'm missing my poetry muse. It's April, I'm supposed to be waxing poetic! And yes, Viggo was sorely missing but Kili and Fili would have made up for him if they'd had more screen time. (Irish Aidan Turner and Dean O'Gorman from New Zealand. Richard Armitage as Thorin stole his scenes too.)At least we get to enjoy Orlando Bloom in all the installments!!

    1. Yes, but Orlando Bloom as a blonde is wrong, in my opinion...

  8. I think they tried to make up for the lack of Viggo by making the...what are they called? Not trolls. Not Hobbits. The bearded dudes whose wives are supposedly hard to tell from the men? Anyway, they're semi-handsome in the movie, and I think it's a way of keeping us from missing Viggo, but it's just wrong and doesn't help. Do you REALLY have to ask what I miss? A brain that doesn't play this ridiculous, reverse twenty questions while people look on in pity and try to guess what I mean. DWARVES!!!

    1. Sadly, I only got to see part of the movie before my son snatched it, claimed it for his own, and hijacked it to Kansas City.

I will get to see the rest at some point. But I should pay close attention to the dwarves, huh? ;)
