Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Lose

When I get something accepted for publication, I shout it from the rooftop. When I get something rejected, I do the same. (As  a back-up singer in a Joni Mitchell tune sang, "Man, the chick is twisted. Crazy. Scooby-shooby...Flip city.") Getting a "no" from an editor means that at least I'm sending out pieces.

Three writing friends--Lynn Obermoeller, Cathi LaMarche and Linda O'Connell--have stories in the Gloria Gaynor collection entitled We Will Survive. Because I love the song, I submitted something...and got a quick "no thanks." But hey, at least I tried.

So Lynn, Linda and Cathi won that round. I lost.

Isn't this a great cover? I've read Lynn and Linda's stories
(at least the rough draft) and they're wonderful tales.

Today I drew a name from the thousands  hundreds handful of followers that I have who left a comment for my book give-away. The drawing was handled by the well-known SODAD--Society of Dust and Doghair. The names were written carefully on slips of paper (see below) before being folded and "stirred."

And the winner is....Kathy M. Kathy, when you finish celebrating your wedding anniversary and put the camera down long enough to send me your address, I'll send you the book. (If you want, I'll even have Linda and myself sign it...to you,  or just a general notation, or to someone else if you'd like to "regift" it later. Let me know.)

And especially for Val with her steeljaw trap of a memory--anyone can jump in, however: There are two song references in this post. With one of them, I gave you the artist. Do you know the song? The other one is the title of this post. Do you know either the singer or the song?

        What's a win or a loss you've experienced recently?

  1. Actually I started a story for that call-out but never finished it...shame on me. And as far as counting rejection goes, this year has been a banner one for me. I now consider myself the Rejection Queen of 2013. Oh well, at least I'm number one at something! :)

    1. Pat--People tell me all the time that I'm #1. They tell me with one finger raised up. At least I guess that is what they're trying to say to me.

But if you don't submit, you have no chance of getting published. So keep carrying that banner. And looking at my writing planner, I think I could be the Princess of Rejection, so I'll hold the other end of that banner.

  2. Oh my gosh! Thanks, Sioux! I haven't won anything in awhile. I would love the book being autographed to me because I will be keeping it.

Sorry that you didn't get into this latest book, but congrats to Lynn, Cathi and Linda. They seem to get chosen a lot.

I'll email you in the morning with my address.

    Thanks for choosing me.

    1. Kathy--You are quite welcome. However, it was random. I closed my eyes, and picked one, unfolded it, and there was your name.

Yes, those three get published a lot. But they also write a lot, so I guess there's a connection? ;)

I have a critique meeting on Wednesday, so I'll have Linda sign it as well before sending it.

  3. My steeljaw memory trap has failed me! Wild furry teeth-gnashing thoughts are gamboling willy-nilly through the blogosphere! I can only think of the Eagles, "Take It Easy," though it's not an exact match for the title. "We may lose, and we may win, but we will never be here again..." I am drawing a blank. It's right on the tip of my trap, but I can't pry it loose. 3 Dog Night is barking for attention, but I don't know if that's it.

My Joni Mitchell is weak. I don't think this is about putting up a parking lot, or drinking a case of you. I am beaten soundly by your musical acumen. And because I'm not a cheater, I cold-shouldered my BFF Google. It did not help that I was busy trying to stop the Edmund Fitzgerald from wrecking when I clicked on you post. My concentration was clouded by that earworm.

I have a win to celebrate. Perhaps tomorrow, on my very own blog, since the hijack of yours has grown lengthy, and I don't wish to be penalized in the future.

    1. Oh, Val. I will have to wait until perhaps tomorrow, when you will get onto your rooftop and start shouting.

I should be ashamed. Both of the songs are obscure ones. Sorry.

  4. I am sorry you did not win THIS round. Obviously, with your attitude, a win in your future. I was about to give up when an editor called last night! We wait and wait and then suddenly THEY are in a hurry, ha, ha. Have a good week!
    Congrats to winner, Kathy.

    1. Bookie--You got A CALL from an editor? I'm impressed.

      Congratulations on another publication?

  5. Sioux, never underestimate your writing ability. Gloria's "people" rejected your story because it didn't fit editorial needs. Gloria didn't reject you; she would love your refreshingly smart-ass mouth and fantastic personality. Now what is that song looping in my ear?

  6. Linda--Is that time stamp correct? Were you up at 3:59 in the morning? Yikes! No wonder you get out so many submissions, if you're up before the roosters.

Thanks for the compliments...At least I THINK they were complimentary. ;)

  7. I always thought that the person with the most rejections is the winner!

After all, it shows how many submissions you made - and even if that particular publication couldn't use your piece, it doesn't de-value it, or the hard work that went into it.

    1. Kim--I agree. And I am well on my way to being the first to the finish line. (Pat Wahler thinks she is the Queen of Rejection, but I am doing my best to de-crown her.)

  8. Sioux... you are killing me... I can HEAR the title of your blog playing in my ear, but I can NOT think of what it is. It will come to me... hopefully I'll have the answer by Wednesday. And, hey, at least you SENT something! I didn't even TRY! So happy for those who did make it though... especially our fellow WWWPs!

    1. Beth--This song came out WAY before your time, sweetie. But good luck.

And yes, it's marvelous that two of the WWWPs are represented in this collection.

  9. You're so right -- rejections are definitely cause for celebration. And you don't know what will happen the next time you send that story out. Just 'cause it wasn't a fit for this pub doesn't mean it won't be perfect for the next. :)

    1. Lisa--I figure, there are times that if I didn't celebrate the rejections, I'd have nothing to celebrate. ;)

  10. Sioux, I sent you and email last night and it came back. Can you send me a correct address at bookwoman1015 at sbcglobal dot net?
