South of Broad? North of Broad? Am I a Broad?

Recently I finished Pat Conroy's book South of Broad. Yes, I know--it's not his most famous novel. Yes, I know--there are movies made from his work ("The Great Santini" and "Prince of Tides") but I haven't read any of his books until now. Yes, I know--I'm behind millions of readers when it comes to Conroy.

Reading South of Broad was life-changing. Or rather, it was novel-changing. Or to put it in an even more accurate way--it changed my direction as a writer. Now. On the project I'm struggling with.

To find out how reading this novel changed my writing, check out my guest post for The Muffin.

And don't forget to read something great this weekend. It might change your life (or your work)...

  3. I commented on site about your article, but I'll add this here: I liked The Prince of Tides so well at the time i read it, that it had pride of place on my main bookshelf for years afterwards. But one day i realized that it wasn't important to me anymore and i sold it or pitched it or something. Funny how that goes. The opposite can really be true, too; a book that wouldn't have thrilled me before, now makes my favorites list because it speaks to who I am now. All the women's-inner-lives stuff that i love now would have bored me in my twenties, when my favorites were Kerouac and Vonnegut. Now, I'd rather be boiled in oil than have to read a "road" novel about a bunch of beatnik dudes.

    1. I loved Vonnegut in high school, and you're right. I don't know if I'd go far enough as preferring to be boiled in oil than read him again, but I'd certainly prefer other authors over him.

Different phases, different needs--so true, Shay.

  4. I've never read Pat Conroy, either, but I love to hear about life-changing books. And sorry I had to delete a comment over there! Blogger's been double-posting for some reason. Wish me luck with this one.

  6. Hey Sioux. I'm trying to send you an email on a totally unrelated subject but it's not sending. So forgive me but zuliliy has crocs at %50 off today. Maybe it's not so unrelated after all. We walk different paths at different times in shoes of our own or in someone else's shoes. hmm

  7. Hey! You've got to read "The Water is Wide." Or see "Conrack," the movie based on it. It's about Conroy's first year as a teacher.

  8. Val--I guess I didn't connect "Conrack" with Conroy. I will have to check out "The Water is Wide." (Is there anything you haven't read? ;)

    1. Pat--It's not on the very last page, but it's toward the end. It wouldn't be earth-shattering to you--it hit me because of some "stuff" that's happened recently...
