Embrace the Messy

This is one of my favorite photos of Radar. It captures him in his favorite state. Just finished from running in the mud and the rain, he's messy... and completely content.

Writing is messy as well. Sometimes you leave a trail of muck behind after writing and revising. And what's left on the page is golden. Sometimes you think you're in a groove but in reality, you've mucked things up royally.

What things do you like to do that are messy?

  1. Ha, Sioux, my life is messy! Dog hair and pawprints....hubby mess and shoes. Today I think Bisuit sprung her tail! Internet says it will heal in a few days. Any dog experience with sprung tails?

    1. Claudia-- I love to spring unexpected tales on people. Oh. You meant a physically sprung tail. Sorry. But leave it to Biscuit to do something like that. Was she wagging it too much? ;)

  2. Apparently I like to chew gum and stick it up under the desks in my classroom.

Because the pupils are always telling me, "Hey! Mrs. Val! You've got GUM stuck on this desk!" Like their cronies had nothing to do with it. Like some of it hasn't been there since before I even inherited those desks when a "more deserving" teacher got new ones. Like I should immediately jump up with a chisel and remove it so they won't keep running their hands over it when feeling under the desk.

    1. Val--That IS your job. De-mess the messes that your messy students made. I'm sure they don't enjoy putting gum where lots of gobs already reside. Give them a clean canvas for their artwork, Immediately.

  3. I don't like it, but pretty much what ever I do ends up messy.

    1. Joeh--For some reason, that doesn't surprise me. ;)

  4. I need the messy to remind myself that there are some things that I cannot control. It also reminds me that there is always work to be done and to get off my fat butt more often. I have a hard time throwing papers away. "I might need them some day." I once threw out all of my high school term papers...I could have used them for reference when I wrote the college papers! I agree...embrace the glorious mess that we are!

    1. NoExcuses--You're right. There IS always work to be done. However, it sounds like your mess is a bit more "glorious" than mine...

  5. The messiest thing in my world is my house, thanks to two dogs and two cats running the show. :) My housekeeping skills have deteriorated considerably since I: a) started writing novels; and b) realized lightning doesn't strike me dead if dog/cat hair collects in the corners and on every available surface. Turns out if you leave it there long enough you can claim it's abstract expressionism. :)

    1. Lisa--Thanks to the dog hair, we now have carpet (free carpeting) even though we originally thought we installed hardwood floors.

All that dog hair cushions the fall when we slip and stumble...

  7. When the kids were little, I'd cover the entire kitchen table with flour and dump out a bucket of Christmas cookie cutters and sugar cookie dough. It was a HUGE mess (and the cookies were not so good) and I'd find flour and sugar cookie dough and sprinkles in all kinds of weird spots (and not always in the kitchen) for a couple months. But gosh it was fun--and I'd gladly waste a day, doing that with the kids again.

    1. Cathy--If you're lucky, when your kids are older, they'll give you grandkids... and the fun will continue. (Those experiences are sweet memories for the Hallettes. They're lucky to have a mom like you.)

  8. You don't really want me to answer that, do you?

  9. Messes in my mind. On my desk. And don't even think about email!
I used to be so neat and tidy. But no lightning bolts have struck now that I don't bother. I do wish I could hire somebody to clean my oven. It's pretty bad.

    1. Marcia--I know. I keep looking for those lightning bolts as well.

  10. Oh Radar, I'd never have recognized you! Maybe we all need to be more like dogs (or little children) and let ourselves enjoy every sensation life has to offer.

    1. Pat--He does that for sure--he does enjoy every sensation life has to offer, especially if it's a messy or wet sensation.

  11. That picture made me laugh heartily! He looks as if he's saying, "I think I'm in trouble, but I'm not sorry, so there!" I had a dog who did the same thing, by the way. My white floor was almost always brown.
