Hoping for Some Snow (Days) and Other Things

Like just about every teacher I know, I'm dreaming of a white school day... a day when I get a phone call or see my school's name, trailing along the bottom of the TV screen... a day when the roads are snow-covered or icy.

And before you start protesting about the danger of snow and ice, I'm not asking for the entire city to be blanketed with slick stuff... just certain parts of our town.

Today it's supposed to get colder and snow is slated (so close to "sleeted") for this evening. This afternoon I'm having a mock interview with one of my students after school. He's hoping to get into a certain high school, and interviews are part of the application process. I'm walking him part of the way home, hopefully before any precipitation begins.

Also, I have 40 or so more pages before I finish this novel by Louise Erdrich. It's an interesting plot. A Native American woman gets attacked by a white man. The family instantly starts to fray. As they try to piece together their family--as they knew it--they also try to get justice. However, since the details are slow in coming and the boundaries are blurred, getting justice might not be possible. And if it is possible, at what cost? How far will the 13-year old son go to get revenge?

I'm hoping the book's ending is as good as the rest of it.

What are you hoping for these days? Optimistic (most of the time) minds want to know...

  1. I still have teacher hunger for snow days even though retired. I only hope it misses the days I have to be on highway heading for treatments. I hope you get your snow. If not, the year is young!

    1. Claudia--I agree. If not today, there's always next week. Next month. I've even heard of freak blizzards in May, so I'll be hopeful until June hits... once June 1st arrives, there's no reason for a snow day... until October rolls around again.

    1. Linda--Thanks for that compliment, but today I'd like the difference to be that I'm in my jammies all day...

  3. I am not really hoping for anything at the moment, because I have it all! But if it will help, I'll hope that you get a snow day.

    1. Val--Yes, you DO have it all. You're lucky that way. And it's 5 in the morning... still waiting for some good news.

  4. I too am hoping to see snow which I think is so exciting. The best part of snow in South Carolina is that it looks pretty and doesn't last long. :)

    1. Pat--It only has to last for the morning... Once school is called off, it can melt quickly.

  5. We're scheduled for snow this weekend and of course, all the kids (and teachers) are annoyed that it's on a weekend. :-) (Though having taught, I TOTALLY get that!)

I'm hoping that my dog will go outside and do her business in the snow. It's a long shot, though. Hard enough to get her out when there's a slight drizzle. :-)

    1. Cathy--She's such a cute pup, she deserves you carrying her out and placing her at various spots until she finds the perfect one. Holding an umbrella over her might help, too. ;)

  6. I looked at all the school names scrolling by, St. this and St. that, but never your saint school. Sorry. You know I've been retired a year and a half and still get that snow day hope and thrill.

    1. Linda--Yes, my hope was dashed into tiny pieces. But there's always the rest of January and February. More snow might be coming at some point in the future...

  7. Guess the weather was slated to be rotten everywhere. Our area lucked out with minimal ice and snow. I can't speak to the roadways as I've been a hermit, tucked in with my hot tea and laptop. The schools were let out early yesterday, though, in anticipation of the wintry mess.

  8. A snow day is always fun (unless you need to go somewhere, of course). Something about being required to stay inside makes me feel productive. Go figure...
