Photos to Movies

Perhaps you're not like me. Perhaps you are tech-savvy, and know how to do everything if it involves a power cord and gigabytes and hard drives.

Not me. I depend on my middle school students to answer my tech questions at work, and on my husband to get me out of technological messes at home.

They say revenge is best served cold. However,
I've made a movie about my son that's so brilliant,
it's blazing-hot, and  through the movie, I'm going to get revenge for all his
childhood shenanigans. This is not even close to my son's worst hairstyle...

But if you're interested in making a movie from your photos, I can help you with that.

Photo Story 3 is a free download. And this time, something free is quite worthwhile...

I've used this program for many years. It makes it easy to import photos. It's simple to move the photos around from one spot to another. Transitions. Cropping. Voice-overs. Adding music. It makes making a movie a breeze.

This past week, I've used Photo Story 3 again to make a couple of movies: one about my soon-to-be daughter-in-law and one about my son. I've incorporated baby pictures (and lots of other pictures) of both of them and as the songs play and the images fade in and out, their toddler, elementary, high school and college years will march along until all that is left is their adult selves... about to get married. (We're going to watch it at the rehearsal luncheon.)

Here is a tutorial if you'd like to try using the program. Here's a You Tube video if you're considering using it. But honestly, once you start with it, you won't need much help. It's extremely user-friendly. And think of how you could use it:

  • a high school/college graduation show
  • a book trailer to promote your book
  • a beginning or end of school year movie
  • entertainment for a family reunion
    The possibilities are endless.

And since I can make movies using this program, and my dog can make movies using this program, so can you.

How about you? I have most of my photos all jumbled up in a huge tub.  Where do you have yours, and have you made movies before? If so, what program did you use. Technologically-disabled minds want to know...

  1. I don't have any kids so I am limited in my resources for tech help. You Tube helps, but I still need to borrow a kid now and then.

    1. Jono--Yes, isn't it embarrassing how much the kids know and how inept we are?

  2. I need to try Photo Story 3! I've been using iMovie on my Mac. But I don't make many movies so every time I start, I have to learn all over again. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Pat--It's made by Microsoft, I think, so I don't think it would work with Macs. However, I read that iphoto would do something similar for you... But that might be what you're using--once in a great while--already?

  3. Oh, thanks for this tip, Sioux! I always *think* I'm going to do something fancy, like make a movie, but I never move from the think stage to the doing stage. You sold me when you said your dog could do it. :-)

    1. Cathy--My golden could do it, your doxie could do it, Lisa's cat could do it. Try it out. Slip some photos into the timeline and THEN worry about the text and/or voice-over.

  4. Very impressive about the dog. Hey, after some delays, I am officially, absolutely, positively retiring in 2 weeks time. THEN I will finally finish your manuscript.

    1. Shay--Congratulations. And no rush. Life (and work) often slows things down...

  5. Do you think your dog will make my movies for me? Because it still sounds too difficult. Technology is not only NOT my friend, it's my sworn enemy.

Are you sure you want to watch that movie at your son's rehearsal luncheon? He might want you to show his just before the vows!

    1. Val--Seriously, this program makes movie-making simple. I am about as technologically talented as Puppy Jack. So if Jack could do it, you could do it, too.

  6. Thanks for the link, Sioux! I'm toying with the idea of making a book trailer, and using this would be a great way to learn. I am the world's biggest tech-know-not, so hopefully I'll understand it.

    1. Pat--It's amazingly easy. Have Winston fiddle around with it first. It's easy for little dogs as well as big dogs...

  7. Thanks for the tip. I had never heard of it before. My photos are scattered in a variety of boxes, and I think one of these days I'll do something with them. Using Photo Story 3 might be a good summer project. And your son looks so cute!

    1. Donna--Thanks. Check out the photo I used for this week's book blurb... He didn't look so cute then. ;)

Making a movie would be a great summer project. I'd love to hear if you like using the program if you decide to do it.
